What Is “Medical Beer”?

What would you say if you were told that doctors in the U.S. once prescribed “medical beer”? Would you believe that doctors once actually prescribed beer? Well, they did!

All beer enthusiasts are familiar with the period of time in U.S. history in which alcohol was outlawed – the Prohibition. In 1921, doctors and beer lovers came up with a clever trick to try to get around the rules of the Prohibition. The trick in question? Medical beer. After all, if doctors were prescribing it, it had to be allowed, right?

The truth is, this trick only worked for a little while. In March of 1921, Congress decided to allow the prescription of medical beer – only to then change their minds a few months later. In November of 1921, all beer, including “medical beer,” was banned once more.
